Volunteers answer a local call

By Daniel Arens

All around the world, people are putting on masks.
Some people have been doing it for quite a long time. In fact, problems have emerged in places like New York, with shortages of masks for medical and health care providers due to COVID-19’s widespread nature sapping up the N-95 respiratory masks and worried residents early stocking up on masks for their own protection.
Now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recommending citizens wear non-medical cloth masks if they need to go out in public. But even before this announcement, several residents throughout the county have begun making basic masks to help out those in need.
It’s a groundswell of local response to this major cause here in our own small, rural area. It ranges from individuals with a knack for sewing and a heart for service, to community organizations and church groups seeing this as a way to come together (in spirit and purpose, if not actually physically) while addressing a major need.
