Wind, coal and the future of Mercer County energy

Wind, coal and the future of Mercer County energy

By Daniel Arens

With strong feelings and intense passion, local residents, as well as representatives from other parts of the state, packed into a single room last Wednesday, the virus practically forgotten as landowner rights, shift workers’ jobs and (above all) the looming question of Mercer County’s energy future drowned out social distance concerns.
At the heart of the meeting is the moratorium on wind energy applications that the Mercer County Commission put in place May 6. The rationale behind the decision is a need to further review the county’s ordinance on wind applications as wind energy (as well as other potential energy sources, such as solar) appear to be potential new projects in the area.
