Assessment hearing set

The bad news is city property taxes are set to go up. The good news is you can find out how much in the public notice in this week’s Leader-News. The lengthy public notice in the newspaper provides a parcel by parcel look at how much the assessment for street improvements will cost each taxpayer. A hearing on the assessments is set for Tuesday, March 25, at 6:30 p.m.
It’s been a lengthy process. A year ago, the city commission decided that the entire city should be included in the assessment district. The cost to replace sewer and water lines on the streets being repaired will still be paid by those residents who directly benefit.
City engineer, Jasper Klein, said at the time that the plan will allow the city to gradually fix each street in town, so that as everyone is paying, everyone will get a new street, eventually.
Last week’s public notice had a few errors, when the wrong subdivisions were listed as part of a routine copy and paste. That meant that the public notice was required by law to run two more times, according to Joan Zimmerman, deputy auditor. The original meeting of March 11 has been rescheduled to March 25.
