Blue Grass Goes Pink moves indoors due to extreme heat
Organizers of the 14th annual Blue Grass Goes Pink fundraiser have announced a venue change for this year's event, citing an expected heat index that could create unsafe conditions for volunteers and attendees.
The event, scheduled for Saturday, July 25, will still begin with its traditional 5K and 10K walk/run at Cross Ranch State Park. Registration opens at 8 a.m., and the walk/run starts at 9 a.m.
However, the evening activities — including the freewill donation supper, remembrance program and bluegrass concert — have been moved from Cross Ranch State Park to the Washburn Memorial Hall, located at 805 Main Ave. in Washburn.
Event coordinator Jill Wiese said the decision was made because forecasts are calling for temperatures near 101 degrees on Saturday.
"We moved it because of the high heat we will be experiencing this Saturday," Wiese said. "The forecast is 101 degrees. It is just too hot to be outside and all of the churches are there serving food and grilling, and I just can't have that. I'm a nurse, and EMTs should not be outside doing that kind of an activity."
