The first ever BHG Carnival for a Cause took place at Washburn Public School last week, raising over $1,000 for area nonprofits.
Just over $500 will be donated to each the McLean Family Resource Center and Wilton Food Bank after over a hundred kids came through the carnival on Jan. 3. The event, which took place in between the Washburn versus Wilton-Wing double header games, offered carnival-style games for attendees, who purchased tickets to play.
Washburn and Wilton-Wing basketball players sold tickets to the event starting in December. The Washburn girls and boys had raised a total of $736 worth of tickets, with the Wilton-Wing teams raising $280, for a total of $1,016.
For raising the most money, the Washburn girls and boys basketball players will be given free T-shirts, courtesy of Viking Screen Prints.
Prizes for the event were sponsored by Great River Energy, and booths were manned by local volunteers from the Wilton City Commission, Wilton Public School, BHG Inc., and more.
Varsity and junior varsity athletes from Washburn and Wilton-Wing teams were treated to a pizza party at the end of the evening, with food and drinks provided by BHG.
The event is expected to take place again during next season’s Miner versus Cardinal double header.
