Celebrating people in action

Landing in the middle of National Volunteer Week, the Washburn volunteer ambulance squad hosted their annual pancake breakfast. Fliers and signs lined the Memorial Hall on Sunday, reading ‘Celebrating people in action’ and that is exactly what more than 150 Washburn residents did, as they piled their plates high and enjoyed the volunteers’ homestyle cooking. Through the course of the day, more than 15 volunteers filled the kitchen and dining room, cooking up and serving a full breakfast of pancakes, eggs, sausage and drinks. A free will donation was taken for the breakfast, and the money raised already has a home within the ambulance squad. "We are looking to get power cots, they are cots that lift up," volunteer Mary Devlin said, "The problem is that everyone is getting a little older and we are hoping that is going to help with back injuries." Along with the cots, the squad is looking into the future, and planning to purchase a new ambulance within the next two years. "With an ambulance, after ten years it is considered to be obsolete, and ours will be like seven or eight years old, so that is why we have started looking to replace it," Devlin said, "That is one of the things that we always try to put money aside for, and we have been pretty successful in raising money and being able to do that."
