City weighs accessibility issue

The Washburn City Commission is taking a look at options to make the family fishing pier in town handicap accessible.

"There’s a gentleman that likes to go down there to fish," City Auditor Joan Zimmerman said. "He had his wheelchair to go down there and had a really difficult time going back up."

Zimmerman said that the incline of the hill down to the boat ramp area made it almost impossible for those in wheelchairs to leave the area without assistance.

"I wonder if that should almost be a part of the Riverside Road project," Commissioner Keith Jacobson said at the July 5 city commission meeting. The City received a 60/40 grant in the fall of 2015 to pave a portion of Riverside Road, from the railroad tracks down to the boat ramp.

Jacobson agreed with Zimmerman that having the area be accessible for everyone was a priority.
