Members of Washburn’s Civic Club spent part of Tuesday afternoon discussing the city’s strengths, weaknesses and the direction they’d like to see it go.
The discussion, which took place immediately after the noon Civic Club meeting, was during one of 10 planned focus group conversations being organized by Strengthen ND. Strengthen ND was hired by the Washburn Area Economic Development Association to create a new strategic plan, and surveying the community is step one.
Members attending the meeting took a little less than an hour talking to Megan Laudenschlager of Strengthen ND, who was focused on answering three questions: What is it you love about Washburn, What are issues that need to be solved and what roles do Civic Club and Washburn play in the city’s future?
Attendees were quick to identify the city’s strengths, which ranged from aesthetic beauty to strong school and business communities. Group members also praised new amenities like the dog park and features like the walking trail and fishing pier.
When it came to addressing needs and areas to improve, the group expressed a need for more activities, both for children and adults.
Weekly movie nights at the Memorial Building were proposed, with attendees noting the building’s new sound system and projector.
