Commissioners for Lewis & Clark expansion, against variance

A proposed $3.5 million expansion to the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center lies in the hands of Washburn city commissioners as they are asked to allow a variance to the setback of the expansion. The variance request would allow the Center to expand to the south and east beyond the setback. Duane Bauer is on the planning and zoning committee and he said he was against the variance. "We’re talking about a 23-foot difference in setback here," Bauer said. "I know that it’s gonna cost money to change, but someplace down the line, we have to stop these variances. That’s the reason we charge them—is because we try to deter people from getting variances. "I look at this as a big, big investment," Bauer said.
