For the past four years, a small group of locals has come together to keep an annual tradition going strong.
The Washburn Riverboat Days committee, a chapter of the Washburn Lions Club, took over organization of Riverboat Days in 2016, when the event found itself on the chopping block.
The Washburn Civic Club had historically orchestrated the weekend of activities, but made the decision in 2016 to step back, citing a lack of volunteers and scheduling issues. Not willing to lose the event, a handful of individuals took on the gargantuan task of saving Riverboat Days.
“We just weren’t willing to let it go,” Committee president Suzy Jacobson said.
Jacobson said that for the past four years, a group consisting of six to eight regular members and a handful of off and on volunteers have worked to fill the Riverboat Days weekend year after year.
Jacobson said the group meets sporadically between July and December, and then hits things hard starting in January.
