Dollars for Scholars has big plans for 20th year

By Michael Johnson, Editor

The dedication required to keep an organization running smoothly for 20 years is immense. Those who have served on the Washburn Dollars for Scholars board have seen their hard work grow into something that is now producing great fruit for today’s youth. Since starting in 1993, the Washburn Dollars for Scholars group has given out 377 scholarships and $221,750, according to board president Jim Kaiser.  The growth in funds has allowed the board to increase the number of scholarships and the amount of those scholarships. It works because the community stands behind the students. “For a lot of the kids it isn’t so much the amount they receive, it’s the amount of people that will give,” board member Gwen DeMontigny said. DeMontigny was a founding member of the board. She said it has been great being on such a successful and giving board.
