Eliminate email?

After one commissioner decided recently against using emails for city business, the Washburn City Commission is discussing how to proceed with correspondence.

"I think it should all be the same and be consistent at least," Commissioner Reese Boehm said at the meeting.

President of the commission Larry Thomas sent an email to the city auditor’s office on July 10 stating that, "Effective immediately, I will no longer be using email to receive items concerning city business."

"Please print and mail any required items," Thomas’s email stated. "I can also be reached by phone."

The email did not list a reason for the change, and Thomas was not present at Monday’s meeting to explain his decision. His fellow commissioners questioned both how efficient a mail-only system would be, as well as how cost-effective.

"The reason we bought those iPads is so everything would be electronic and we wouldn’t have so much paper," Commissioner Keith Jacobson said, adding that the devices were an investment made by the city.
