Enriching the community
With an effort to enrich the community in mind, the Washburn Forestry Board is working to make a difference one tree at a time.
The city of Washburn annual Tree Giveaway will take place from 10 a.m. to noon May 17 in the parking lot of TruCommunity Bank. This year’s selection will include Black Walnut, Prairie Sky Poplar and Nanking Cherry.
“Planting trees is a meaningful way to enrich a community, offering environmental and social benefits,” said Phaidra Yunker, Forestry Board vice president. “Trees transform ordinary streets into welcoming spaces, adding seasonal color, softening landscapes and creating peaceful retreats.”
Each year, the Forestry Board secures donations and grants to help fund the Giveaway. Three species are selected, which includes two tree varieties and one shrub, which all focus on the diversity and local adaptability. Yunker said the board strives to provide at least one fruit-bearing species to help with local environmental and community benefits.
