The City of Washburn is working to turn around issues with its financial operations after its 2017 and 2018 audit revealed improper fund transfers and unwarranted leave payout.
According to an audit performed by the N.D. State Auditor, the City of Washburn had financial inaccuracies or shortcomings in 10 different areas, including issues with special assessment funds that was classified as a potential violation.
The audit, provided in a press release from the State Auditor’s office on Tuesday, notably highlighted the lack of individual funds for each special assessment bond.
“Due in part to the city’s failure to adequately account and monitor special assessments, the negative fund balance has grown from $324,236 in 2016 to $639,911 in 2018,” the press release stated.
