Heart health events jump-started

Students and staff welcomed in new challenges, prizes and mascots for this year’s American Heart Association fundraiser kickoff last week, celebrating a major achievement as they geared up to spread the word on heart health.
Mary Reiser, of the American Heart Association, addressed Washburn Public School Jan. 17 to get the ball rolling on this year’s fundraisers -- Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. This year’s fundraisers feature a monster theme, with fitting incentives for students who hit certain milestones along the way.
Elementary students will spend the next month collecting donations in person and online, with each dollar getting them closer to a special prize. Students will earn monster-themed toys and T-shirts, as well as other goodies as they reach certain dollar amounts in their fundraising. The class that raises the most money will get a special, custom reward.
“To go with the monster theme, the winning class will get to wrap up their teacher like a mummy at the end,” School counselor Deb Torkelson said.
Last year’s winning classes, Mrs. Feist’s third graders and Mrs. Szczur’s first graders, celebrated their accomplishment by smashing whipped cream pies into their teachers’ faces.
