Hopping for heart health

Washburn Public Schools students kicked off this year’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser on Jan. 20 in the Olde Gym, with a mission of exceeding the amount of money raised last year for the American Heart Association.

"This Year’s Goal: Student chairperson’s of this year’s event Hannah Brobst and Gabi Neal believe that the students and staff can exceed last year’s amount and reach $7,000," organizer Deb Torkelson said. Torkelson also serves as the school’s counselor, physical education instructor and teacher of the seventh-grade health class. Last year, students raised $6,950.

Torkelson said that as of Tuesday, 68 students from Kindergarten to eighth-grade had signed up to raise money for the event by asking for donations from friends and family members.

"They may go door-to-door, send emails, and ask through a Facebook link. It’s gotten a lot easier than the days of just being able to ask in person," Torkelson said.

She said that there is also an option for individuals to donate online, which is convenient for anyone who feels compelled to give, but lives outside of the area.

Students that raise at least $5 get a thank you gift and get in free at the boys basketball games on Feb. 11, where they can show off their jump-rope skills during halftime of the B squad game.
