In peace or war, exchange students must return home

Kiev’s Maidan, or Independence Square, has been destroyed. The blackened ruins and gaping windows of Ukraine’s landmark have left Kiev looking like a war zone for the first time since World War II.
This is the reality Liza Serhiyenko and Vlad Cherevkov will face when returning to their home country of Ukraine next month.
The two foreign exchange students have been living in Washburn since August, after being placed not only in the same state, town, and school as one another, but also the same grade.
The students were placed through the Future Leaders Exchange (FLEX) Program.
Vlad laughed and said, "Liza and I are quite different, we have a love-hate relationship. We’ll definitely communicate when we go back to Ukraine."
Their stay in Washburn began shortly before the violence broke out in Ukraine.
The relationship the students formed, during their time in Washburn, may prove beneficial as they slowly settle into their life back home.
