Keeping it sane in Ukraine

Keeping it sane in Ukraine

The sound of wailing sirens indicating the presence of nearby troops are now a daily occurrence for Liza Serhiyenko and her fellow Ukrainians, who are forced to seek safe havens as the threat of Russian attacks in the city of Lviv continues with no end in sight.

What she and her boyfriend are facing in the western part of Ukraine (roughly 70 miles from the Polish border) is minuscule compared to the destruction that’s taking place in Mariupol, reports Sehiyenko, where locals are rapidly evacuating the city that’s seen about 80-percent of their buildings go down in ruins at the hands of the Russian military.

Many of Mariupol’s residents, in fact, are fleeing the area by traveling eastward to Lviv via Ukraine’s railway system. About 60,000 of them are arriving on a daily basis, consisting of groups of mostly women and children since males ages 18-60 are forced to stay in place and defend their territory.
