Lack of commissioners draws split board on local funding request

A local group’s request for funding failed after a lack of commissioners split the remaining board’s decision.
During a Sept. 8 city of Washburn Commission meeting held at the city hall, Washburn Life President Donna Sommer requested $2,500 from the lodging tax fund to purchase banners to place on billboards along U.S. Highway 83 with solar lighting.
Sommer explained there are two billboards the group would like to put banners over on to not only revitalize the signs, but to draw people into Washburn. She noted, one billboard currently has a banner promoting the downtown area with downtown business owners.
The two signs are 8’x20’ and 8’x10’ and she would like to include some sort of solar lighting to bring even more attention to the billboards.
The reason Washburn Life requested the lodging tax funds, Sommer said, is because that funding is set aside for promoting and encouraging people to visit Washburn, which she believes these banners would do.
