‘Crash – bang – boom’ goes the SIDNE car

It’s not every day students get permission to drive a car across the gym floor. Freshman students were recently given the opportunity to do just that.

Although they didn’t get to "burn rubber" or "squeal the tires," reckless driving was definitely encouraged when seated behind the wheel of the Simulated Impaired DriviNg Experience (SIDNE) car.

The McLean County Farm Bureau made one of six stops in the county on April 8, setting up a driving course in the Washburn school gym.

Already in its eighth year running, the distracted driving inservice targets high school freshmen.

Dan Johannes, a farm bureau board of directors member, donates a large part of his time to the program every April, Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Targeting a group of rookie drivers and encouraging them to keep their eyes on the road seems like a "no-brain-er."
