‘If you can dream it, you can do it.’

The first of October is a day the students and staff at the Washburn School will be talking about for many weeks, if not months, to come.

While the weather outside was a bit chilly and dreary, the atmosphere inside the school gymnasium was pleasant and inviting.

Star-struck students piled on to the bleachers, eager to hear a message and live performance from North Dakota-grown artist Kat Perkins.

The 33-year-old singer-songwriter said youth and music are two of her favorite things and she wanted to find a way to merge them into something positive, following her Top 5 season on NBC’s, "The Voice."

The result? "The Positive Social Media Tour," in which the "rising star" partners with EduTech to discuss social media to students, in small towns across the state. A special, live performance is also included in the presentation.

Washburn is just one of the many schools Perkins is visiting on the first leg of her tour, which will cover 18 cities in 13 days, and run through November.
