A new head librarian will begin employment with the Washburn Public Library shortly after the first of the year.

Elizabeth Patterson, Washburn, accepted the position and Washburn City Commissioners approved hiring her at their Monday night meeting. Patterson's first day will be Jan. 7.

Commissioners also approved the purchase of 11 iPads – six to be gifted to city workers as employee appreciation gifts (for personal use) and five for office use.

Initially, the city planned on purchasing the 16GB model, at an average cost of $375 per iPad. Commissioner Larry Thomas questioned the low storage capacity, especially when uploading GIS maps, and wondered how much a 32GB model would cost.

In the end, the board decided to purchase the 32GB model, at a cost of about $425 per iPad. Thomas said for $550 more, it makes sense to purchase the 32GB model and double the storage capacity. He said, "I just don't want to regret spending $4,000."
