Robotics club shows off skills

Washburn High School’s newest club is sharing its knowledge with younger students, combining creativity and teamwork to build something fitting for a sci-fi movie.
During a 4-H activity day in Underwood, the Washburn robotics club brought their brains and their gear to show to area elementary school students. The club members showed the kids in each of the four sessions the robot that they built for competition this year.
Next, the younger students were given the reins and taught how to build their very own robot.
"The team members broke into groups and helped the students put together a Lego robot which was programmed to sense whether a ball was red or blue," Robotics club adviser Joshua Eddy said. "If the ball was blue, the robot would beep and back up. If the ball was red, the robot would hit the ball like a golf club."
The robot built for competition this year was much more complex, and helped get four of the team members to State. The students took first place in the Alliance division for their robot, with Saint Mary’s High School from Bismarck as their partner. Eddy said teams are given two and a half minutes to complete different objectives.
"St. Mary’s robot was able to climb and hang on the mountain while our robot used it’s scooped front to push game pieces into our area," Eddy said.
