Safety Day at RDO

What does a slow moving vehicle sign look like? Is it best to approach a horse from the front or the back? "Stop, drop and roll" – is that a funky dance move?

Area first graders learned the answer to all of the above at RDO Equipment's 5th Annual "Safety Day" on Feb. 19 in Washburn. And, for the record, "stop, drop and roll" is not a funky dance move.

Students from Washburn, Underwood, Center and Turtle Lake participated in the event, each making their way through a handful of safety stations placed throughout the shop.

Using discarded cell phones, students learned how to dial 9-1-1 and, once on the line, how to report an emergency.

RDO office administrator and event organizer Wanda Schneider said a person would be surprised by how many children simply dial 9-1-1 and then hang up. "No one teaches a child to dial 9-1-1 and then talk," she said. The station focused on getting children to open up about their emergency situation.
