Second thoughts? For the sheriff, only for a fleeting moment

When McLean County’s sheriff for 16 years, Don Charging, announced his recent decision to not seek re-election when his term ends this year, he wasn’t shooting from the hip.

"I’d been thinking about it for some time," Charging said in his bright, organized office at the McLean County Law Enforcement Center in Washburn.

But, still, Charging admits to mixed feelings.

Has he had second thoughts?

"Sure," he said chuckling. "Especially after quite a few people, employees, too, talked to me about it. But that didn’t last long. It’s time for a change," he said.

"What I want to do is leave the position for the next sheriff without having to face all the problems we’ve overcome," Charging said.
