Seeing gold through rose-colored glasses

It's a rare occasion to see Patrick Pochant without a smile on his face. These days, the Washburn High School senior has an awful lot to smile about, including his upcoming stroll through the State Class B Boys Basketball Tournament "Parade of Academic Champions."

He will be acknowledged for not just one or two, but three awards during this special night of recognition.

First on Pochant's list of merits is his attainment of a gold membership on the 2015 North Dakota Academic All-State Team, Class B division. To be considered for this award, high school seniors must be nominated by their principal and compete for the honor on a state-wide basis. Washburn Secondary Principal Glen Weinmann nominated Pochant for the honor.

Student selection is based on overall grade-point averages, ACT or SAT test scores, extracurricular activities, involvement in one's community and leadership qualities.

"It was great to be recognized with such a prestigious honor and to see that I also had some great friends on the list," Pochant said. "It was a very 'job well done,' pat on the back, take a deep breath kind of feeling.

"I'd like to thank Principal Weinmann for nominating me in the first place."
