Spreading fire safety

In honor of Home Fire Prevention Week, fire safety is being promoted for Washburn residents of all ages, from homeowners to elementary school children.
The Washburn Fire Department visited Washburn Elementary Tuesday to educate students on fire safety, from extinguishers to learning to stop, drop and roll.
This weekend, the fire department will team up with the American Red Cross and McLean County Emergency Management to bring fire safety directly into area homes.
The groups are partnering for a ‘Home Fire Preparedness Campaign’ canvassing event in Washburn, with a goal of reducing deaths and injuries from home fires in the community.
“Installing smoke alarms cuts the risk of someone dying from a home fire in half, so we’re joining with groups from across our community to install smoke alarms,” said Rob Stotz, Red Cross Disaster Program Manager in Western North Dakota. “We also will be teaching people how to be safe should a fire occur in their home.”
