Area students and staff members got a small extension on their weekend, as bitter cold wind chills forced local schools to delay class on Monday morning.
As a winter storm made its way through North Dakota starting on Sunday, school administrators decided to push back class a couple of hours. Washburn and Wilton Public Schools both delayed class two hours on Monday, with Underwood, Turtle Lake-Mercer and Center-Stanton following suit. Garrison would start 90 minutes late.
No area schools reported canceling class for the day, when winds over 30 miles per hour were reported.
The highest gusts were observed on Sunday evening, when wind speeds were clocked at 62 miles per hour a mile from Washburn. Sterling would observe the highest speeds of the day, with 66 mile per hour winds.
