Teams invite you to Relay For Life

By Michael Johnson, Editor

Bringing up cancer turns most any conversation sour, because at this point, there’s still no magic bullet to stop the terrible disease in its tracks. It’s hard to think how anyone could wrap an event around cancer that brings about positive thoughts and celebration. But the McLean County Relay for Life has proven to do that in the past and will continue that celebration of life Friday in Washburn at the school track. It’s been 10 years since Washburn first hosted the McLean County Relay for Life event. And for some people that have attended it in the past, it’s a regular reminder of the miracles that can happen through enough prayers, fundraising and hope. Sarah Kadrmas is one of the locals that believes in the power of the relay and cares so passionately about it that she helped start up two teams this year, Northland Community Health Center of Turtle Lake and Community Against Cancer of Washburn. “It’s just a really beautiful event where everyone comes together for the same fight and same celebration,” Kadrmas said of the relay. While being the captain of a team, or two teams in her case, can be a stressful addition to a busy life, the relay is an emotional experience that seems to take that stress away.
