The Legislature and education

School administrators are watching this year’s legislative session with a cautious eye as bills over religion and firearms in the classroom are considered.
Wilton Superintendent Andrew Jordan spent some time checking in on the 66th Legislative session last week, discussing several notable bills during the school board’s meeting on Jan. 16.
Jordan said one school-related bill currently making its way through the state legislature is house bill 1325. The bill, if passed, would allow those eligible for a concealed carry permit to bring firearms into public events and schools.
“It would allow anyone over 18 to carry concealed on school property,” Jordan said. “Schools can’t prohibit it.”
Board member Duane Johnson pointed out that due to new legislation, permits aren’t required for concealed carry within the state, as long as the firearm is unloaded.
