The training is in the bin

It’s one of the most dangerous aspects of farming and for emergency personnel – a person becoming trapped in a grain bin.
Emergency personnel from across the county converged on Washburn Dec. 5 to be part of a grain bin extrication training exercise.
The training included two aspects of extrication – classroom and hands-on. The classroom portion was at the Washburn ambulance bay and the hands-on demonstration was at RDO Equipment in Washburn. The training also included learning how to vent a grain bin.
The extrication training was through McLean County Emergency Management and the North Dakota Firefighter’s Association. Area responders were invited to take part in this training.
Noelle Kroll, McLean County emergency manager, said those who attended learned it would take at least 90 minutes to recover someone who had been engulfed.
"This may be longer, depending on the equipment and personnel that have been trained in this type of recovery," she said.
