Three-class system set to make waves

Three-class system set to make waves

North Dakota basketball is set to undergo a significant change next year, as the NDHSAA Board of Directors has officially approved a proposal to switch to a Three-Class System of play. This new system, which was approved Feb. 8 and will go into effect during the 2023-24 season’s start, is designed with the aim to level the playing field for all student athletes in the state and address some of the shortfalls in the number of students participating in girls basketball. The proposal was thoroughly reviewed by the NDHSAA Board of Directors and Board Committees, and data was gathered from a majority of the member schools. The new system will have three divisions, AA, A and B, with different criteria for each division. Division AA will be for the largest schools (650 or more students), Division A for mid-range enrollment schools (163-649 students) and Division B for schools with the lowest enrollment (162 students orless).
