Track team receives surprising donation

By Michael Johnson, Editor

The idea of the Southern McLean Track and Field team finally getting to have competitions at home again has  started a great deal of excitement around town. For co-head coaches Shayla Sinclair and George Levey, the opportunity to have a meet-ready facility is something that could improve the team's abilities and improve upon the Washburn-Wilton pride in the sport. Last Wednesday, the track and field team gathered to receive a $4,500 check from the River Riders motorcycle club. The check was twice the size that the club was shooting for reaching. The support they received from the the local and regional businesses was beyond their wildest expectations. That support showed them, and now the track and field team, just how much support is behind the project. The track team was handed the check on the cracked, patched and multicolored track that will soon be getting a new covering. The club president Bill Reilly said that about 140 people attended their comedy supper and the final check came after their expenses. “For our first fundraiser, it went very well,” Reilly said. Sinclair said that the money that the group brought in will go a long way to paying for necessary equipment that the school will need to host events. She mentioned hurdles and pole vault equipment as necessary equipment for starters.
