Subduing a belligerent suspect, tending to a fallen officer and rescuing injured civilians were all part of the program during McLean County’s June 2 active-shooter exercise at the local courthouse in Washburn.

During one of the more compelling drills, Field Training Officer Alex Torrez instructed an armed individual to “drop the gun, keep your hands where I can see them.” After a few rounds of blanks were exchanged, two law enforcement members accessed the attacker’s hideout and placed him in handcuffs.

The full-scale exercise, as described by Director of Emergency Management/Risk Management Noelle Kroll, was conducted to identify any shortfalls that the McLean County Sheriff’s Office may have in confronting armed/active assailants on courthouse property.
