Update on Carvell Estates

By Erica Kingston, BHG Intern

Talk has been negative since the flood started. It’s hard to find a positive spin when houses and lives have been uprooted. With the water flowing from Garrison Dam beginning to be lowered, two families on Carvell Lane outside of Washburn have a hopeful outlook amid inevitable damages. Glen and Ruth Goetz, who live at 1241 Riverside Lane, started sandbagging soon after they heard news of the flooding. The river has stayed away from their house but ground water has found its way in. Their sump pump is working continuously. “That’s the first time that has ever happened in all the years we’ve been here,” Ruth said. “We feel pretty lucky. It has gone down a little bit. We feel pretty good about where it is at. I think we are going to come out of it unscathed for the most part.” The Goetz’s sump pump, which is going off every 10 minutes, is working in collaboration with the drain tile they have around their house. The combination of them both is what Ruth attributes to keeping the water at bay.
