The Washburn Municipal Airport is one step closer to seeing some improvements after receiving a grant from the Department of Transportation.
Just under $169,000 has been awarded to the Washburn Airport as part of a series of DOT grants announced May 30. The 14 grants, totalling $2,521,708, were made available through the department’s Federal Aviation Administration.
“The federal funding announced today will help rural airports across the state make infrastructure improvements, design plans for future growth, and make sure safety standards are met that will keep North Dakotans safe,” Senator Heidi Heitkamp said in a statement.
The Washburn Municipal Airport received $168,891 in grant money, to be used in developing a master plan for future development.
Washburn Airport Authority board president Ron Becker said a previous plan had been designed with a crosswind runway, which was met with some opposition. The new plan will explore alternative designs.
“This is to change the airport layout plan for the future without a crosswind runway,” Becker said Monday.
