Washburn School plans for facility improvements

By Danielle Abbott

About a year ago, a facility improvement plan was written, which made several changes to the school facility and grounds. During the Nov. 17 school board meeting, Rick Tweeten explained that the improvement plan was recently being reviewed. The committee met to discuss the updated time lines, where some projects were completed ahead of time, and several other projects need to be moved up or further back in the time line. Some of the items that were discussed for the facelift include resurfacing the track, roofing, carpeting and masonry. "These are things that will have to be juggled around as finances come in and as things come up," Tweeten said. The roof repair project would be broken into two sections and would address several spots in the new gym. The board explained that the roof repairs are becoming more of a common problem and may have to be moved up in the general building ground schedule. The running track is another item, which desperately needs some attention. The improvements for the track include getting the track patched, fixing the long jump approach, and sealing all cracks. The track construction was scheduled for last summer, but did not happen, so the board is hoping to have those upgrades made during this coming summer.
