Washburn elementary students raised over $14,000 this year for the American Heart Association, and celebrated the feat with five rolls of duct tape.
The sound of students cheering filled the Washburn gym on Friday and echoed down the halls, as elementary classes found out the total from their annual fundraiser. Their goal was to beat last year’s figure of $13,286, a number they would end up leaving in the dust.
When all the money was counted, the school had raised a total of $14,635 during this year’s Kids Heart Challenge, formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. The fundraiser kicked off on Jan. 14, with students starting to gather donations around the community.
Students jumped rope and dribbled basketballs during half time of the Jan. 25 Cardinal boys varsity home game to raise awareness for the fundraiser, which wrapped up on Jan. 28. After the fundraiser total was announced on Friday, students took turns attaching tape to principal Christina Reynolds, eventually securing her to the wall.
The money raised will go to the American Heart Association.
