The Olde Gym at Washburn High School was so quiet you could hear a pin drop, as students from surrounding communities gathered together for the McLean County Spelling Bee.
Schools competing in the April 2 event were Garrison, Max, McClusky, Turtle Lake-Mercer, Underwood, Washburn and Wilton.
The spelling bee was for elementary school children, grades one through five.
All of the children were given a written word test.
Following a brief lunch, the kids were back to the grind.
The boys and girls stepped up to the mic and orally recited and spelled a handful of words. Every student in each class was given the same set of words to spell, the difficulty based on their grade level.
