Winter hits Washburn

Some weekend snowfall and lower-than-normal November temperatures are likely the beginning of a chilly and damp winter, according to the National Weather Service.
Warning Coordination Meteorologist John Paul Martin, of the National Weather Service, said Monday that area thermometers are resting about 15-degrees lower than normal across North Dakota and other states bordering Canada.
“The normal high temp at this time of year is the mid-forties,” Martin said. “We’re going to be between 25 and 35 degrees this week, so we’re running an average of 15-degrees colder than we should be.”
Martin said the week of Nov. 5-11 will likely only see temperatures hit the mid-thirties once or twice, with the forecast leaning more toward the 20-degree mark. He said these temperatures are consistent with patterns usually observed in early December, not November.
“The weather we’re having right now is pretty typical of what the first or second week of December is like,” Martin said. “So we’re basically about one-month off.”
Martin said next week, starting Nov. 13, things will likely warm up slightly before temperatures dip down again as Thanksgiving arrives.
