Blackjaws end season with 1-1 outing at state

By Robyn Rohde, BHG News Service

When it comes to knowing baseball, the members of the Blackjaws amateur baseball team have collected over 40 years of experience. Last week the team that includes members from Hazen, Beulah, Washburn and the Bismarck area put their knowledge into action at the 2010 North Dakota Amateur State Baseball Tournament in Jamestown. The Blackjaws opened the newly redesigned state tournament format with an 8-2 win over the Fargo Mets in Class A pool play Friday. A tight 1-1 race in the nightcap game broke apart late as Grace City upended the Blackjaws 5-1 to end their season.  Six of the 11 Blackjaws players who participated at state either are currently or have been high school and American Legion baseball coaches. Most of them also played high school and college baseball. "They all know the game well," said the team’s coach and infielder Dennis Samuels. "Most of these guys are just great athletes."
