Cardinal boys kick off season with buzzer beater

The Washburn Cardinal Boys Basketball Team kicked off their season in the most exciting way possible last week Friday in their game against the Kidder County Pirates.

Trailing by five points with less than a minute to go in the game, the Cardinals pulled their way back into it and finished off the game with a buzzer-beating shot by junior Tagen Bertolotto to put the home team on top, 47-46.

Neither team got out of the gate particularly fast Friday night, but it was the Cardinals that marked the first field goal of the game after three-and-a-half minutes had passed in the first quarter.

It wasn't until 29 seconds showed on the clock before the Pirates notched their first field goal, but their chances at the free throw line had them just behind Washburn at the end of the quarter, 7-6.

Throughout the second and third quarters, the Pirates would gain a small advantage that the Cardinals would then fight their way back from, usually led by junior Caleb Weisgarber whose dribble-driving ability helped keep the game tight essentially the entire way.
