Cardinal girls lose to #1 Carrington

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

Having already long secured their number one district seed and the resulting first round bye, the Washburn girls basketball team still had some challenges left for the final week of the regular season. On Thursday, they welcomed the number one team in the state, the Carrington Cardinals and then finished off the schedule with a home game against the Flasher Bulldogs. The battle of the Cardinal nicknames, Carrington won this round, besting Washburn 60-34 but the hometown team is going into the post season off of a win after sinking Flasher 67-31. Proving that they are number one for a reason, Carrington did what few teams can by taking a comfortable lead on Washburn and holding it for an entire game. The combination of a 6’2” tall center and good perimeter shooting was a bit too much for Washburn to handle. The Cardinals hung in there through the first quarter, trailing by only six points after one. However, the second quarter was the beginning of the end as they struggled to find the basket amid the Carrington defense.
