Cardinals Baseball splits week
The Washburn/Wilton/Center-Stanton Cardinals baseball team experienced both sides of the game in a quick two-day stretch last week, earning an impressive offensive victory over Heart River before running into a tough matchup against Beulah Miners the following day.
The split showcased the Cardinals’ offensive potential, steady veteran leadership, and flashes of strong pitching, while also highlighting areas the club will look to clean up as the season moves deeper into spring.
Washburn/Wilton/Center-Stanton opened the stretch Tuesday in strong fashion, knocking off Heart River 10-3 behind a balanced offensive attack and a complete-game effort on the mound from Jeran Thompson.
The Cardinals matched Heart River’s opening run in the bottom of the first, then quickly seized control in the second inning with a fourrun outburst that put them in front for good.
After Heart River chipped away with single runs in the second and fourth innings, WWCS responded each time.
The Cardinals plated three runs in the fourth to stretch the lead, then tacked on two more in the sixth to put the finishing touches on a sevenrun win.
Though the Cardinals recorded nine hits, they also showed patience at the plate and capitalized on defensive miscues, forcing Heart River into six errors throughout the contest.
