Cardinals battle through packed week of Region 4 softball action
The Washburn/Center-Stanton Cardinals endured one of their busiest stretches of the softball season over the past week, playing six games in seven days while showing flashes of offensive firepower against a demanding schedule.
Despite several difficult matchups, the Cardinals managed to pick up four wins during the stretch and remain in the middle of the Region 4 standings race as postseason play draws closer.
Washburn/Center-Stanton opened the week May 5 with a narrow 7-6 victory over Central McLean in a key regional matchup.
The Cardinals built an early lead with two runs in the first inning and two more in the second before adding another pair in the fourth.
Central McLean mounted a late comeback with four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, but WCS held on to secure the victory.
Isabel Samuelson led the Cardinals offensively by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Breana Laning reached base three times with a hit and two walks. Brooklyn Hetletved also had a strong performance, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk.
Kylee Fiedler and Dani Cordell each drove in runs, while Erica Neumiller added an RBI and worked multiple walks.
