Cardinals boys split week with 1-1 stretch

The Washburn Cardinals boys basketball team experienced a week of contrasts, opening with a dominant district road win before running into a tough challenge away from home later in the week.
Washburn began the stretch Jan. 20, traveling to White Shield and turning in one of its most complete performances of the season.
The Cardinals controlled the game from the opening tip, using defensive pressure and efficient offense to pull away early and cruise to a 68-26 victory.
Washburn set the tone on the defensive end, limiting White Shield’s scoring opportunities and forcing turnovers that led to transition points.
The Cardinals were able to build separation quickly and never allowed White Shield to find a rhythm offensively.
The balanced effort allowed Washburn to extend its lead throughout the game while keeping fresh legs on the floor.
The lopsided win improved the Cardinals’ District 8 record to 4-0 and reinforced their position near the top of the standings as the season moved into late January.
