Cardinals close out regular season with win

Washburn closed out its regular-season slate with a 3-0 sweep over Strasburg-Zeeland, Oct. 23, in Strasburg. The Cardinals improved to 13-10 on the year, while Strasburg-Zeeland remained winless with one tie in its 21 outings this season.
SZ took a 3-0 lead in theopening set after a service ace by Madison Van Beek, and the Lady Clippers still held a 7-6 edge, when Claire Fischer fi red three aces during a 5-0 spurt that put Washburn in the lead (11-7) for good. SZ closed to within 11-9 after a kill by Van Beek, but Washburn responded with a 7-1 run to extend the lead to 18-10, and the Lady Clippers could not draw closer than five points after that. A kill by Dehmey Ternes gave the service back to Washburn with a 22-16 advantage, and Sadie Goven served out for the Cardinals, including an ace to cap a 25-16 victory.
Washburn never trailed while cruising through the second set. A kill by Goven and an ace by Mae Jennings gave the Cardinals a 4-0 lead, and after a kill by Kadee Silbernagel and an ace by Megan Van Beek, Washburn ripped off eight unanswered points behind the serving of Breanna Laning to open up a double-digit (12-2) advantage. Later, Goven fi red a pair of aces, and Mae Jennings recorded two kills to extend the lead to 18-5, and after SZ scored on the next two serves,
Ternes served for the final six points of a 25-7 victory by Washburn that gave the Cardinals a commanding, 2-0 lead in the match.
