Cardinals drop season-opener to Hazen
Washburn erased a doubledigit deficit in the fourth quarter, but Hazen closed out the game with a 15-7 run over the final three minutes, and went on to defeat the Cardinals, 46-39, Dec. 5, in Washburn.
It was the season-opener for Washburn, which plays in District 8 and Region 4 of the Class B division, while Hazen, which is a member of Class A Region 4, improved to 2-0 on the season.
Both teams struggled offensively over the first three quarters, and after Sadie Goven’s field goal at the 6:20 mark of the first quarter gave Washburn a 4-2 lead, the Cardinals would remain ahead until midway through the second frame.
A putback by Chevelle Obering and a field goal by Goven gave Washburn an 8-3 advantage with just under three minutes left in the opening frame, but the Cardinals went scoreless over the remainder of the period,
while Hazen got a field goal from Emaley Keller and a pair of free throws by Lauren Doll to trim the deficit to 8-7.
Washburn clung to its slim lead until Doll put in a free throw at the 4:16 mark of the second quarter to tie it up (10-10), and after the Cardinals regained the lead on a pair of free throws by Obering, Izabel Smith put back an offensive rebound to deadlock the score at 12-12 with 2:45 left in the first half.
