Cardinals play two tough district games

By Adam Thomas, BHG News Service

It was a ‘tale of two games’ for the Cardinals in district play this past week. On Tuesday, Washburn traveled to Underwood for an appointment with the Comets and then on Friday they hosted Turtle Lake-Mercer at home. In the three days that separated the two games, the Cardinals went from a very shaky and unfocused team in a loss to Underwood to a team that was clicking on nearly every cylinder against the Trojans. Vs. Underwood--Neither team opened the game especially well at the Underwood School gym, but a three-point buzzer beater by the Comets at the end of the first quarter put them up three points and gave them the momentum. Coming out in the second quarter with a 9-1 run, the Comets were lockdown on the defensive end, taking advantage of Washburn’s poor passing, leading to a couple of steals and baskets on the other end. The Cardinals got their first score in the quarter courtesy of Tiffany Jaeger: a three-pointer with 1:30 remaining. Washburn ended the half scoring only four points in the second as Underwood expanded their lead to a healthy 13 points, capped off by a three-pointer by Comet senior Crystal Dammen.
