Cardinals ramp up to district with win

The Washburn Cardinals picked a good time to turn in their best scoring game of the year with tournament time just around the corner, maybe shaking up some preconceived notions about Washburn’s ability to vie for a spot at regionals.

In the week leading into the district tournament, the Cardinals went one for three. The two losses came against Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood and Carrington, but the win against Flasher was the stand-out game of the season for Washburn.

The game against Flasher was at home and it was the Cardinals’ senior night, although the team lacks a single senior player. In its place, a small ‘parents’ night’ pre-game recognized the player parents as well as the team’s coaches.

When it finally came down to action, the Cardinals came out of the gate unlike any other time this year.

All five starters put at least one point on the scoreboard in the first quarter, with both Mandy Shell and Carly Freeman leading the way with six points each.

Leading 21-14 after the first eight minutes, that one quarter total was more than some of Washburn’s entire games at the start of the year, showcasing how far the young team has come in a few months.
